Building permit requirements for pergolas in Germany vary by federal state.
General Rule
Most German states exempt open pergolas under 30 sqm from permits. LuxaShade standard sizes (9-24 sqm) typically qualify.
Key States
Bavaria: up to 75 sqm covered area exempt. NRW: up to 30 sqm. Lower Saxony: up to 40 sqm. Baden-Wuerttemberg: up to 40 sqm. Berlin: up to 30 sqm. Hesse: up to 30 sqm.
When a Permit Is Needed
Enclosed structures (glass walls make it a conservatory), areas exceeding state thresholds, conservation zones, or listed buildings. Adding ZIP screens does NOT make it enclosed.
