Technical glossary

Technical terms used in project review

Use this glossary to read standards, product pages and project notes consistently before a final engineering review.

Anodizing / Eloxieren / Anodiseren

Anodize

Definition

Electrochemical aluminium surface treatment that forms a controlled oxide layer. It is different from powder coating and should be specified with colour, layer thickness and exposure context.

Aluminium extrusion / Strangpressen / Extrusie

Extrusion

Definition

Manufacturing process where heated aluminium is pressed through a die to create a constant profile section. Geometry, alloy and tolerances affect strength, assembly and finish quality.

Powder-coating quality label

QUALICOAT

Definition

Quality framework for powder coating on aluminium. It is used to discuss pretreatment, coating class, colour consistency and exterior durability without turning every project into a blanket certification claim.

Verbundsicherheitsglas / laminated safety glass

VSG

Definition

Laminated safety glass made from two or more glass panes bonded with an interlayer. For fall protection it is a project-specific glass build-up, not a single universal thickness.

Einscheibensicherheitsglas / tempered safety glass

ESG

Definition

Thermally toughened safety glass with higher bending strength than annealed glass. In railing work it is often discussed as part of a laminated build-up, not as a stand-alone fall-protection answer.

Glass interlayer

PVB / SGP

Definition

Interlayers used between glass panes in laminated glass. PVB is common; SGP is stiffer and can be selected where residual capacity or deflection control matters.

Eurocode actions on structures

EN 1991

Definition

Eurocode family for actions on structures. For outdoor aluminium and railing systems it informs wind, snow and imposed-load assumptions that still need project and national-annex review.

Glass in building

DIN 18008

Definition

German standard series for glass in building. It is important for glass railing language in Germany, but project approval still depends on application, glass build-up and local review.

Base channel / Bodenschuh / basisprofiel

Base shoe

Definition

Continuous aluminium channel that clamps or supports glass panels at the base. Selection depends on mounting route, substrate, edge distance, drainage and required glass build-up.

Guided exterior textile screen

ZIP screen

Definition

Exterior fabric screen retained in side guides by a ZIP edge. It is selected by opening size, fabric openness, wind exposure, motor route and service access.
