An aluminium terrace cover is more permanent than an awning and more flexible than a closed conservatory. The right system depends on five planning parameters: usable area, fixing method, wall connection, load zone, and intended use.

System types

Bioclimatic pergola (louvre roof): Adjustable aluminium louvres, motorised or manual. Fully weathertight with louvres closed. Suitable for residential and commercial terraces up to approximately 54 m² (coupled modules). Starting from approximately €4,000 (3×3 m, manual).

Retractable pergola: Entire roof retracts into a cassette. Maximum openness, but no louvre modulation. Useful where full solar access is required in summer. Luxa 800 (PONARC), from €7,990.

Fixed aluminium canopy: No moving parts. Maximum structural simplicity, lowest cost. Suitable as an entrance canopy or small weather shelter. No climate control.

Five planning parameters

1. Usable area: Up to 25 m², single modules suffice. Above 25 m², coupled systems with central post or large-span systems without intermediate supports are appropriate.

2. Fixing method: Freestanding (four posts) or wall-mounted (two posts, wall bracket). Wall-mounted systems require assessment of wall load capacity — especially for ETICS-clad facades.

3. Wall connection: The louvre roof connects to the building with a wall profile sealed against the facade (butyl tape plus cover flashing). Standing water at the wall causes moisture damage.

4. Load zone: Wind zone and snow load zone determine structural sizing. In heavy snow zones (Alpine foothills, upland areas), reinforced cross beams are required.

5. Intended use: Residential (private): lower load classes adequate. Commercial (hospitality, hotels): increased live load, wind class 3 or 4 recommended, CE documentation for public safety required.
